The 3-3-3 Method of Cooking Awesome Rice in the Instant Pot

Our family eats a ton of rice.  It’s cheap, my son isn’t allergic to it, and it fills up tummies.

We eat so much rice that years ago we invested in a high dollar rice cooker.  It was AWESOME!  It cooked the most perfect rice ever.  The biggest downside was that it took over an hour to cook, but it was so good that we were fine with that.

I have a confession to make.  I hate cooking rice on the stove top.  I boil starchy water all over the place every.single.time.  Then, I burn half the rice on the bottom of the pan.  When we got our rice cooker, I jumped for joy.

Fast forward to about a month ago.  My beloved rice cooker died.  As in kicked the bucket, keeled over, not with us any longer.  I was so sad.

We decided that we had to buy a new one.  I couldn’t live without it.  Until we looked at it online and realized that the new model is over $300.  Yikes!  Whatever!  That stinks.

So I decided to mess around with cooking rice in the Instant Pot.  I searched online and saw so many recipes it made my head spin.  The cooking times varied from 2-15 minutes, some on high, some on low, some on steam.  Some had the rice soaking first, some had it rinsed, and some had your wave your hand over it and sprinkle it with cupcake sprinkles.  Okay, maybe not that last one.

I choose a recipe that sounded reasonable and played around with it until I perfected it for our family.

May I present to you,

The 3-3-3 Method of Cooking Rice in the Instant Pot

3 C of white rice, rinsed well
3 C water
¾ tsp salt
3 TB butter

  1. Rinse the rice very well to remove all the starch. This is super important if you want fluffy rice and not sticky glue.  Place the rice in your IP liner and put in some cold water.  Swish it around with your hand.  The water will turn a murky white.  That is the starch from the rice.

Rice in the Instant Pot

  1. Strain the rice in a fine mesh colander. Repeat the rinse and strain 4-5 times until the water is mostly clear.
  1. Place the rinsed rice back into the IP liner. Make sure to completely dry off the outside of the liner, then place it in the Instant Pot base.
  1. Add the water and the salt and stir well.
  1. Thinly slice the butter and place it on top.

Rice in the Instant Pot

  1. Cook on High for 3 minutes.
  1. NR for 10 minutes.
  1. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

There you have it!  A very simple way to make great rice in the Instant Pot.

Rice in the Instant Pot

Do I miss my high dollar rice cooker?  Not so much!  My family can tell a difference, but it’s much closer to the rice cooker rice than my stove top attempts.

I am very close to perfecting a Spanish Rice recipe in the Instant Pot that I am over the top excited about.  Be watching for that recipe in the near future.

Rice in the Instant Pot is my new favorite thing.  No more starchy water cooked onto my stove top.  And… I don’t have to shell out $300 bucks.  Score!

P.S.  I usually double this and make it in my 8 qt. Instant Pot.  I wouldn’t try to double it in my 6 qt. IP.
